Truly a gem We have multiple tenses, incorrect pronouns, and, my favorite of all showing vs telling There are plenty of ways to show that the character started to lose complete control when crying instead of just telling us it happened It s part of the creative process of writing, and if I m being honest, this book is lacking pretty heavily in the creativity department I can t count on both hands how many times the word stuff was used rather than specifics The stuff we talked aboutI was crying and stuffWhat stuff would you like It s such a vague, empty word, and it really takes away from the credibility of the author or the story itself when it s used four times in one paragraph.Grammar antics aside, the plot here isn t exactly radiant either The book focuses on a war veteran who loses her memories due to PTSD She s hospitalized and treated for this, and the twist is that her memories hold some pretty dark secrets Her memory is pretty pick and choosy, which might be a legitimate effect I ll admit I don t know that The problem with this is that, there s a scene where she s in the middle of therapy, and she gets a huge, vivid flashback to something that happened a fight with her husband, let s say First she relives that scene Then she repeats the entire scene to her therapist, with her therapist saying things like, Please, go on to break up the paragraphs We get pages and pages of a single memory that probably isn t relevant to the plot, and then suddenly the main character freezes and says, I really don t want to think about this any I have so many dark secrets, jeez Then whyyyyyyy did I just have to suffer through this memory twice if the main character wants to bury it again The therapist calmly says, I let you talk about it because I thought you wanted to I apologize, and that s the end of the therapy session The useless information thrown into this book makes me think it was the author s NaNoWriMo project, that he was purely trying to hit a certain word count Information is constantly repeated, often right after it s been released the first time We learn about something that happened to the main character, and she rehashes it five seconds later just for fun There are also entire chapters where the character just walks from one place to another Entire Chapters One in particular starts out by saying that she just got out of a meeting with a therapist, but the chapter never once mentions anything they might have talked about, which is supposed to be the bread and butter of this book Instead, she reflects on something completely irrelevant while she walks from the office to her bedroom And that s the whole chapter I didn t intend to aggressively pick this book apart, but it needs a lot of love and fixing There s a chance that some readers would absolutely enjoy this if it had a true editor, but I would recommend people don t read it until if ever it gets fixed first flag 1 likeLike see review Feb 19, 2018
